Hydroseeding New

What is Hydroseeding?

Hydroseeding is a fast and cost-effective way to establish larger lawn areas, creating a healthy and vibrant lawn.

A specially prepared mix of grass seed, fertiliser, mulch, tackifier, and water is sprayed evenly over the soil, forming a protective layer that promotes quick germination and strong root growth.

Ideal for residential lawns, commercial sites, slopes, and erosion-prone areas, hydroseeding provides full coverage, reduces erosion, and delivers a lush, green finish using premium seed blends and proven techniques.

When to hydroseed a new lawn?

The ideal time to hydroseed is early autumn, when the ground is still warm, moisture levels are higher, and weed growth is minimal. These conditions help the seed establish strong roots, creating a healthy, resilient lawn that can handle dry, hot spells through spring and summer.

Hydroseeding can also be carried out in spring. While lawns usually establish quickly at this time of year, they may struggle during summer due to shallower root growth and increased competition from summer weeds and grasses. Additional watering and monitoring may be required to support successful establishment through warmer conditions.

Before hydroseeding, it’s important to address any existing lawn issues, such as poor soil conditions or drainage concerns, and ensure the site is properly prepared. Good preparation provides a smooth finish and gives your new lawn the best chance to establish successfully and grow evenly long term.

Surface Preparation

Good preparation is the key to a great lawn. The time you spend getting the surface right will directly affect how well your new lawn establishes and how it looks long-term.

Remove existing vegetation

Spray out weeds and unwanted plants with a non-residual herbicide. For established lawns, remove old turf with a turf cutter to create a clean base.

Clear debris and cultivate the soil

Remove sticks, stones, and old grass or weeds, then cultivate the soil to about 100mm depth using a rotary hoe or by digging.

Level the site

Rake the soil carefully to level the site, maintaining at least 100mm of topsoil. Avoid exposing subsoil, which is low in nutrients and can cause uneven colour and growth.

Consolidate the soil

Lightly tramp or roll the soil, adjusting levels so the surface sits flush with paths and driveways. Rake again to achieve a smooth, even finish.

Your seedbed should be firm to walk on, leaving only a faint footprint. Taking the time to prepare your site properly will help ensure a strong, even, and healthy lawn.

Hydroseed Pricing

We use premium seed blends and proven techniques to help your lawn establish evenly, producing strong growth, excellent coverage, and a lush, green finish.

Lawn Hydroseed Pricing

Hydroseeding is a cost-effective way to establish a new lawn over larger areas. We use a premium blend of Dwarf Rye and Fine Fescue or Ultimate Tall Fescue in our hydroseed mix, or we can apply a seed blend of your choice. The sprayed-on mulch bonds to the prepared soil, helping protect the surface from wind and rainfall. Combined with fertiliser, the mulch creates an ideal environment for seed germination and strong early growth.

Banks Hydroseed Pricing

We can hydroseed almost any bank, large or small, including those made of clay, papa mud, or sandstone. Seed is selected to suit the application, and additional products are included in the mix to increase tackiness, helping the mulch adhere securely to the surface and reduce erosion during establishment.

Roadsides Hydroseed Pricing

We hydroseed roadsides and roadside banks for civil contractors following the construction of new roads or after road alterations and repairs. Our hydroseed mix contains a high seed application rate to promote strong establishment and reliable coverage.

Our large-capacity hydroseeder, fitted with a hose and spray gun, allows us to efficiently cover large roadside areas and apply hydroseed accurately across challenging or hard-to-access terrain.

Pricing varies depending on site size, access, and ground conditions. Please contact us discuss your project requirements.

Dust Control

Dust can create significant issues on construction sites and poses a health and safety risk for workers and the surrounding environment. It can also lead to complaints from neighbours and passersby, and in some cases may result in abatement notices from the local authority.

Using our large-capacity hydroseeding unit, we apply a stabilising slurry that forms a protective cap over exposed ground surfaces, helping control dust quickly and effectively across large or difficult areas.

Slips and Erosion Control

Every site is different when it comes to erosion and slips, and the right combination of products is often needed to achieve effective stabilisation.

To control erosion quickly and cost-effectively, we use Flexterra®, which contains advanced tackifiers that bond directly to the soil on application. This helps stabilise exposed surfaces immediately and supports vegetation, establishing up to eight times faster than on untreated ground.

ProGanics™ Biotic Soil Media™ is a topsoil alternative designed to accelerate the development of depleted soils and difficult substrates. It can be applied over almost any surface, supplying organic matter and improving growing conditions where natural topsoil is limited or unavailable.

When ProGanics™ and Flexterra® are used together, they provide immediate surface protection while creating ideal conditions for rapid vegetation establishment and long-term erosion control. This combination is particularly effective on steep banks, slips, construction sites, and areas where fast stabilisation is critical for compliance and site safety.

Landfills

Hydroseeding can be used as an alternative daily cover for landfills. A specially formulated blend of polymers ensures the mix adheres effectively to the tip face, helping to seal odours and deter vermin.

Unlike traditional soil covers, hydroseeding applies only a thin layer, which reduces the amount of material used and helps prolong the operational life of the landfill while maintaining effective coverage and compliance.

This method is efficient, environmentally friendly, and reduces the impact on landfill capacity, while providing a practical solution for daily site management.

Hydroseeding Questions

What is hydroseeding?

Hydroseeding is a method of establishing lawns by spraying a prepared mixture of seed, fertiliser, mulch, and water onto prepared soil. The mulch helps retain moisture, protect the seed, and improve germination, allowing grass to establish more quickly and evenly than traditional hand-seeding.

It’s a practical and cost-effective option for large areas, new sections, banks, and sites where laying instant lawn isn’t necessary or practical.

Do you prepare the ground before hydroseeding?

Yes, proper ground preparation is essential for successful hydroseeding. We can provide hydroseeding as a standalone service where the site has already been prepared, or we can carry out full site preparation including soil cultivation, levelling, and final surface preparation prior to application. Pricing depends on the site conditions and the scope of work required.

When is the best time to hydroseed or overseed a lawn?

Autumn and spring are ideal times for hydroseeding and overseeding, as cooler temperatures and regular rainfall create favourable conditions for seed germination and establishment. Autumn is generally the best time, as it allows the lawn to develop strong roots before the heat and stress of summer.

Do you provide aftercare advice?

Yes, we provide clear aftercare instructions following hydroseeding to help ensure the best possible results. You can view our aftercare advice online, or feel free to contact us directly if you would like further guidance.
